Effective search capabilities are key to connecting your visitors with the content they are looking for. Hippo CMS provides a built-in search engine as well as integration points for external search platforms.
Out-of-the-Box Search Capabilities
Standard functionality includes free text search, querying individual content and metadata fields, and applying faceted filters. Any of these three methods can be combined.
All common query types are supported, including phrases, wildcards and range queries. Search results can be fine-tuned by boosting individual document fields. Faceted filters can be configured using any document fields you like so you can enable intuitive, context-sensitive narrowing down of search results.
Implementing these search capabilities in your website is made easy by the standard delivery tier components provided out-of-the-box.
Hippo CMS has Apache Lucene built into its content repository, providing powerful, scalable, high-performance text indexing and searching at JCR node and property level.
Hippo CMS’s delivery tier provides an abstraction layer on top of the Lucene library through a Java Search API. This allows developers to build queries and iterate results at object model level (so-called content beans). Standard page components further simplify implementation by providing configurable default queries and pageable results sets that are ready to be rendered by a template engine. Utility classes are provided to parse raw search query input and optimize performance.
Search Platform Integration
In addition to built-in indexing and searching, Hippo CMS also provides integration points for enterprise search platforms such as Solr and Elasticsearch. This enables indexing at object model level rather than content repository level, and opens up possibilities for seamless integration of content from any source within your enterprise architecture.
More information about search platform integration can be found on the Integrations page.
