Release notes 7.7.1 (GA)

5 April 2012

Announcing the General Availability of Hippo CMS 7.7.1

Introduction

With the new Hippo CMS 7.7.1 release we are making the 7.7 version generally available, qualified for production usage. With the 7.7 major release we introduced a whole set of new features, see the 7.7.0 release notes.
Besides ensuring and verifying the quality of the initial 7.7.0 release we add the following features for 7.7.1:

  • Improved auto export module
  • Improved Channel Manager Overview
  • German translation of the CMS UI
  • User management improvements
  • Separate Site user access control
  • Improved activity log that scales to extremely large numbers
  • Channel Manager Events
  • Improved HST
  • Improved Image Scaling
  • Extended Field Validation

Improved auto export module

Auto-export is now available as a separate add-on. We now have added support for delta xml and multiple content modules. As a now separate add-on module using the auto-export needs to be configured explicitly. Follow the instructions in the upgrade documentation for enabling the auto-export if you are using it today. See automatic export for more info.

Channel Manager Overview

The channel manager is extended with a separate view that gives a great overview of your channels grouped by channel type and locale. See configure channel manager overview how to configure the overview and adjust your blueprints.

German Translation of the CMS UI

German translations are now available by default for the CMS.

User and Group Management Improvements

The user, group and permission management has been improved. Hyperlinks have been added for easier navigation between the separate views. Permission information now also is visible.

Site user access control

We added configuration options to explicitly allow or deny site visitors login access to the CMS. By dedicated access control it is now possible to separately configure login to the CMS and Console application.

Improved event logger

The workflow event logging has been greatly improved to support millions of log entries which can be retained almost indefinitely with minimal performance overhead. Refer to use the improved event logger.

Channel Manager Events

The Channel Manager API has been enhanced to support lifecycle callback handling during creation or update of a new Channel. You can now wire in custom callback ChannelManagerEventListener’s which allows to add extra behavior, or even stop the creation or update of a Channel.  For details see channel manager event listener.

Improved HST

Automatic HST-2 add-on component configuration wiring from Spring assembly files contained within jars. Spring components from any jar get loaded into a dedicated spring applicationContext, see https://issues.onehippo.com/browse/HSTTWO-2038.
The Channel Manager now works out-of-the-box when accessed over https: it is no longer needs a separate Apache ProxyPassReverse rule.
The HST logging has been improved further in several areas, and numerous small bugs have been fixed.
For a complete list, see the jira release notes.

Improved Image Scaling

The quality of scaled images has been improved a lot through the usage of the open source imgscalr library. The original image data is used as-is whenever possible: image quality does not degrade when no scaling is needed. The image scaling process now is automatically throttled to protect and enhance the robustness of the CMS application itself.

Extended Field Validation

Besides the already possible check for required fields, the 7.7.1 release now provides support for adding custom field validators to the CMS with localized error messages. For documentation of this new feature see custom field validator.

Upgrade

The steps to upgrade from CMS 7.6 to CMS 7.7 are described in upgrade from 7.6 to 7.7.
For customers with a Hippo Enterprise Subscription (HES) we have tooling to upgrade configuration in the repository automatically.
For customers currently using 7.7.0 no further upgrade steps are needed, besides possible (re)enabling the auto-export module, see the auto-export documentation for more information.  Depending on your needs some of the newly added 7.7.1 features might require configuration, check out the documentation links for each individual feature above.

Getting Started

To try out the new functionality of Hippo CMS 7.7.1 use the maven archetype see instructions on the hippo trail.

You can also check out and run the Hippo Go Green demo:

  1. svn co http://svn.onehippo.org/repos/hippo/hippo-demos/hippo-go-green/tags/hippogogreen-3.05.03

thank you,

The Hippo team
