Create a backup of your repository before starting the upgrade process. In particular, you will be starting a new version of the CMS on the old repository content stored in the database. This is primarily a preparation for the production upgrade, i.e. when the repository has been initialized already.
It is strongly recommended to create a full backup of your repository, when started cleanly with the 7.5 version of your project. This allows you to replay the upgrade and prepare an upgrade path for your production installation. You can create a backup by copying your repository data folder and your database. If you use the default embedded derby database the database files are usually located in you repository data folder.
Make sure that there are no outstanding requests for (de)publication nor any scheduled (de)publication jobs.
Verify that the maven project that is upgraded initializes the repository correctly when started cleanly with the 7.5 CMS. If this is not the case, export templates, cnd, content and (hst) configuration to create a project that does.
Some of the upgrade steps contain instructions to modify data (e.g. hippo:initialize nodes) in a running repository before you bring it down. Read the steps carefully and apply the changes in the repository before you start upgrading artifacts in the project.
